About the Song

When I listen to the song, I cannot help but think about the significant meaning of the connection between hair and my understanding of the black community. My first experience with this topic of discussion was the story of a news anchor many years ago who had been facing backlash for how her hair had looked. Then, I noticed how businesses held black hair under such scrutiny. Hearing about how wearing a doo rag in public was seen as a poor representation of what the family stood for. These ideals are often seen and taught at such a young age. However, as we age, we begin to shape our morals and perspectives on society. Leaning toward moral relativism, I found the mentality "take me as I am" empowering and limiting. To fully embrace one's hair is to love a part of one's identity, and I spent much of my time killing it to avoid the judgments that come from operating in professional spaces. Even now, my hair leaves the impression of more thug despite my soft-hearted character. Culturally, the difficulty is finding that balance between my brand as an individual and the identity of the groups I belong to. Do not lean so far into your individuality that you begin to isolate yourself, and do not lean so far into the norms of your societal groups that you sacrifice your traits for sameness. This is the line that we walk in years of becoming. I have shared my story; feel free to share yours😎
